The Mother Ship

I have recently been asked to contribute a painting to the 100 Mothers exhibition organised by Harry Pye. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/100_Mothers

This image is in remembrance of mine. The exhibition was first launched in 2004 but has expanded over the years to culminate in this '100' Mothers, with many fantastic artists taking part, exhibiting a fascinating diversity in approach. With the war over the women who owned those smiles were returned to a subservient life. The project of the West - which can be read most clearly as a project in Betty Friedan's The Feminine Mystique, the history of a propaganda campaign far more sophisticated than the concurrent demonization of Communism - was to prove that real life was back, and to restrict the definition of real life to the pleasurable consumption of material goods within a system of male hegemony."

complete with wedding ring. Upon seeing her skeletal likeness,

These impressive images are based on Opthalmic tests and are by

Shelley James - Artist in Residence at the Bristol Eye Hospital.

She is developing and experimenting with approaches to print in

glass - with fascinating results.

'Johnny Eck'

Artist, Photographer, illusionist, Penny Arcade Owner,

Punch and Judy Operator and Expert Model Maker, Johnny Eck starred

in Tod Browning's 'Freaks' and lived to the ripe old age of 79 - dying in 1991.

He and his full-bodied twin brother Robert were also employed by an Illusionist

for his routine, in which Robert would heckle from the audience to be invited

onstage and sawed in half. During the 'Illusion' Robert was switched with his

twin Johnny, who played the top half of his body, whilst a dwarf played the bottom

half and was dressed in specially designed Trousers. After being sawn in half,

the legs would get up and run around prompting Eck to jump off the table and start

chasing his bottom half, shouting "Come back! I want my legs back"

Asked if he wished he had legs he replied:

"Why would I want those - then i'd have pants to press"

According to Brewers Dictionary of Phrase and Fable (1894-95)

"When a man has had a drink he is advised to take next morning a 'hair of the same dog'

in allusion to an ancient notion that the burnt hair of a dog is an antidote to it's bite". At any rate, it makes you forget the pain for a wee while...

Ghosts of Gone Birds

Ghosts of Gone Birds is the Brainchild of Director Ceri Levy, best known for his documentary 'Bananaz' about Damon Albarn's band 'Gorillaz'. Following on from a film he made called 'The Bird Effect', Ceri decided to amass a creative army for conservation, and invited 80 Artists, Musicians and Writers including such luminaries as Peter Blake, Billy Childish, Ralph Steadman and many more besides (including me) to submit work based on extinct birds to be showcased at the Rochelle School London E2 from 2nd - 23rd November.
